Browser horror game

Minhocão

First-person horror game set in the Minhocão, the main building of the University of Brasília, with the university’s real history under the dictatorship.

A corridor of the Minhocão at night in the game, with the concrete ceiling, the lamps and the posters on the walls

The challenge

To make anyone who knows the ICC feel they are inside it, in a game that opens straight in the browser on computer and phone, and to tell the story of the university under the dictatorship without mixing fact and fiction.

What was built

  • The basement is generated by code for every game, following the building’s real floor plan: wings, blocks, squares and dozens of furnished rooms.
  • The ground-floor corridor never ends, and each lap shows a year of the dictatorship, with real dates.
  • The monster hears and sees, inspired by the guards who followed students around the campus, and there are several ways to escape it.
  • A screen tells the history behind the game, with facts and sources checked against the report of the Anísio Teixeira Commission.
  • After the ending, you can walk freely through the building, with no monster, and read the story of each place.

Under the hood

  • Runs in three dimensions in the browser, with Three.js, with nothing to install.
  • All the sound is generated on the spot, and nothing leaves the device: no account, no cookies, no tracking.
  • Automated tests of the map generator and a script that plays through the game in a real browser.
